Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Therapeutic Laser at Northside Therapies: A Powerful Adjunct to Manual Treatment

At Northside Therapies, I’m always looking for ways to support your recovery, reduce pain, and help your body function at its best. Alongside the hands‑on osteopathic techniques many of you already know — such as soft‑tissue work, joint articulation, and muscle energy techniques — I’m now offering Therapeutic Laser, also known as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT).

This gentle, non‑invasive modality has been used for decades to support tissue healing and reduce discomfort. When combined with osteopathic manual therapy, it can offer an extra layer of support for people in Kallangur, North Lakes, and across North Brisbane who are dealing with persistent pain, inflammation, or slow‑to‑heal soft‑tissue issues.

What Is Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?

Low Level Laser Therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular activity. Unlike surgical or high‑heat lasers, LLLT does not cut, burn, or heat tissue. Instead, it works at a biochemical level – encouraging cells to function more efficiently.

The light energy is absorbed by the mitochondria, the part of the cell responsible for energy production. This can help:

  • Support tissue repair
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Improve circulation in the targeted area
  • Ease discomfort in irritated or overloaded tissues

The treatment itself is painless. Most people feel nothing more than a gentle warmth or no sensation at all. Sessions are quick, and the therapy can be easily integrated into your usual osteopath appointment at our Kallangur clinic.

How Therapeutic Laser Supports Manual Osteopathic Treatment

As an osteopath serving patients across North Brisbane, my goal is always to help your body move better, recover faster, and function more comfortably. Manual therapy is excellent for improving mobility, reducing muscle tension, and restoring balance in the musculoskeletal system. However, some tissues need a little extra support, especially when inflammation or cellular stress is slowing things down.

This is where LLLT can be a valuable adjunct to osteopathic care.

LLLT may assist with:

  • Tendon and ligament irritation
  • Muscle strains
  • Joint discomfort
  • Localised inflammation
  • Chronic soft‑tissue tightness
  • Post‑treatment soreness or sensitivity

By supporting the body’s natural healing processes, LLLT can complement hands‑on osteopathic treatment and help you feel the benefits more quickly. It’s not a replacement for osteopathic care, but rather an additional tool that can enhance the work we do together.

What a Session Looks Like

During your appointment at Northside Therapies, I may suggest using the therapeutic laser on a specific area if I believe it will support your treatment goals. The process is simple:

  1. The laser device is placed over the targeted area.
  2. Light is delivered for a short period, usually a few minutes.
  3. The area is reassessed and integrated into your manual treatment plan.

Because it’s non‑invasive and gentle, LLLT can be used across a wide range of musculoskeletal presentations. Many people at our Kallangur clinic appreciate how quick and comfortable it is.

When Therapeutic Laser Is Not Appropriate

While LLLT is safe for most people, there are important situations where it should not be used. At Northside Therapies, your safety always comes first, so I avoid using therapeutic laser in the following circumstances:

  • Over tattoos – The pigment can absorb light differently, increasing the risk of irritation.
  • During pregnancy – As a precaution, LLLT is not applied over the abdomen or lower back.
  • On children – I do not use therapeutic laser on paediatric clients.
  • Over areas with active cancer – LLLT is not applied to known or suspected cancerous tissue.
  • Directly over the eyes – Protective measures are always used to avoid exposure.

If you’re unsure whether LLLT is suitable for you, we can discuss it during your appointment. I’ll always assess your individual situation before recommending any adjunct therapy.

Why I’ve Added LLLT to My Practice at Northside Therapies

My aim has always been to provide thoughtful, evidence‑informed care that supports your long‑term wellbeing. Therapeutic laser offers a gentle, effective way to complement osteopathic treatment—especially for patients in Kallangur, North Lakes, Burpengary, and the wider North Brisbane area who are dealing with persistent soft‑tissue irritation or inflammation that needs a little extra help.

By integrating LLLT into your session when appropriate, we can target tissues in a different way, support cellular recovery, and help you move toward your goals with greater ease.

If you’re curious about whether therapeutic laser could help you, feel free to ask during your next appointment. I’m always happy to explain how it works and whether it may be a useful addition to your treatment plan.

FAQs

Is therapeutic laser safe for chronic pain patients?

Yes. LLLT is commonly used to support people experiencing chronic soft-tissue pain and inflammation. As an osteopath, I assess each patient individually to determine whether LLLT is an appropriate addition to their treatment plan.

How is LLLT different from dry needling or remedial massage?

Dry needling and remedial massage both work physically on muscle and connective tissue. LLLT works at a cellular level using light energy — it’s non-invasive and particularly useful when an area is too sensitive or inflamed to treat with direct manual pressure.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your presentation. Some patients notice improvement after a single session; others benefit from LLLT being included across several appointments. I’ll always discuss expectations with you based on your individual situation.

Is Northside Therapies the only clinic offering LLLT in Kallangur?

Dr Luke Richter is currently the only practitioner offering therapeutic laser at Northside Therapies. If you’d like to discuss whether LLLT is appropriate for you, book in with Luke directly.
